Yeah for 3 day weekends! (Marine or Ocean Day)
On Saturday Erin, a coworker, and I went to Uji which is just south of Kyoto and known for it's tea and the fact that the last 10 chapters of The Tales of Genji were written there. They claim that it's the best tea in Japan. I don't think so. Actually I really don't like it except when it's in food - like noodles or ice cream. When drinking it by itself it has a very distinct taste which I don't care for.
It was a pretty hot day but we managed to walk quite a bit, see some temples and shrines, have some tea noodles and green tea ice cream.

| Those wisteria must be really pretty in May. |
| This is the temple that's on the 10 yen coin (which I'm holding). |
| A (dead) cicada (locust). |
| They're big!! And noisy, when they're alive. |
| Murasaki san - the author of the Tales of Genji. |
| The Uji River which is the only river that comes out of Lake Biwa. |
| This is said to be the site of the first bridge in Japan. |
| It's a little cooler on this walkway. |
| And a nice feeling when you stand over this water. |
| So many frozen treat choices. I ended up with the most simple. Yummy. |
We were going to go to a Tapas restaurant in Kyoto on the way back but we realized there was a festival going on, and since Kyoto is packed with people on the best of days, we decided not to fight the crowds, and the added heat. So we went to the underground shopping area of Kyoto station.
And had dinner at a soup restaurant. It was good!
