Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. I'd been using the Picassa app for my photos and they discontinued it. I'm having trouble figuring out how to get my photos onto this blog. It works for some and not others and I don't know why. But I will share what I can.
Occasionally Shioli's mother plans something for dinner that she thinks I might like to cook and she invites me for a cooking lesson. I love it but feel bad because she works all day... This past time she used goya, which is probably some kind of squash - it's long and green and very bumpy - and made goya champulu with egg and pork. It's a famous dish from Okinawa, goya is supposed to be very good for you, but it's bitter - not my favorite, although the egg and pork were yummy.
This is kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) salad - easy, just microwave the pumpkin with a little water after cutting it into chunks (you can eat the skin) and then add mayo.
And this - egg in a fried tofu pocket simmered in soy sauce, mirin, sake and sugar (the usual ingredients for Japanese cooking). You put a raw egg in then close the pocket with a toothpick and simmer. I'm going to try it with vegetables in the egg too.
The main reason I went there was to learn how to make Japanese style spaghetti. For some reason that's the picture that didn't come through. But nevertheless it was very good.
At school we were supposed to go to a park on a city bus so the kids brought their lunches. Unfortunately it rained - we have been getting a LOT of rain. So we had a picnic indoors. The moms put in a lot of work for this special occasion!
I also went to a place where they make pottery - Shigaraki. I went with Cindy, Shin, Erin and Amanda (it was a crowded car). It was a very nice day but unfortunately I can't get those pictures either...
